The 2022 World Cup will have 32 teams competing in Group Stages and a straightforward knockout stage. The Group Stage will see each team play two matches – one home and one away – against the other teams in their group. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Round of 16 where they’ll be joined by the fourth-placed team from each group and the winner of an inter-group match between Japan and Australia. The Round of 16 will then include groups A, B, C, D, E, F and G with each team playing three matches. The top two teams in each group will progress to the Quarterfinals while the third-placed team advances to the Semifinals.

The Semifinals will be played as a straight knockout with the winners progressing to the Final while the losers compete in a Third Place Play-Off match. The Final is scheduled for Sunday December 17th at 9pm local time (10pm UK time).

As part of the global broadcast rights agreement, Fox Sports will televise matches across all 64 fixtures in English and Spanish languages. Forty-two games will be played in Europe while 26 will take place in Asia and Oceania. The opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow is scheduled for 4:00pm local time (3:00pm ET). 

In order to accommodate different time zones around the world, each nation was given a specific window of dates to compete.
